Biking TIBET

4. A Morning Ritual

Aug 23st, Yanbajing(3830m) -> before Suge La(4,785m)
Weather:Fine / Stay at tent
Once you get off a main road it is very difficult to get mineral water in Tibet. On this trip we had a water purification instrument Katadyn in advance. This equipment is a popular edition of Swiss army's one.

I make clean water every morning.
The source of water is from a pool about diameter of five meters. The water has become clouded with mudflow into a pool. The cause of water clouded is maybe lime or something. Pomp can't work after purge several hundred cc due to filter clogged. Every each times I have to wash and shave the surface of ceramic filter.

Pumping long hour, my muscle of arm is getting bursting and I was breathing faster and faster. Oxygen is less than half from the world here below so that limit is reached so early. After all I spent 45 min to fill up a 1.5 litter bottle.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude of 4000 meters forces an unreasonable demand upon us.

I feel like abating nausea and headache. Nevertheless, pitching my tent made little progress owing to dizziness at altitude 4800 meters. I suppose it was oxygen deficiency in my brains.

After rapidly movement like standing up and squatting down to drive in some stakes, we have to endure for a short while. I supposed it is lack of oxygen to treat lactic acid in our muscle transformed from glycogen.
At that time, I endured very often with shouting...
"What a hateful lactic acid...!"
By the way, we have to cross "Suge la (= Suge pass)" altitude of 5300 meters tomorrow near at hand. I tried to sleep very well prepare for tomorrow.
